What type of school are you aiming at?

Público, concertado, private: which is which

A público is state run and free. A concertado is privately run on a state contract, free to teach in and not free in practice, because uniform, lunch, activities and a voluntary contribution sit outside it. Those two are the only ones allocated through the official admission round, scored on a points system. A private school takes no public funding, sets its own fees and admits on its own criteria at any time of year. An international or British school is almost always private and teaches a foreign curriculum. Which one you are aiming at changes your deadline completely, so it is the first thing we ask.

Why the month decides everything

The main Valencian admission round opens and closes on set dates in the spring, and most of your move has to be finished before it. Miss it and you are not without a school, but you lose the choosing: there is an extraordinary phase in July for families who arrive late, and once term starts a place is assigned by the Comision Municipal de Escolarizacion rather than picked by you. Your landing month tells us which round you are aiming at, and whether it has already closed.

We use the birth year, and whether the birthday falls before or after September, to work out the Spanish year group and whether your child moves up a year by moving country. Both are stored with your answers and never shared. How we handle your data.

Why we ask ages and not year groups

Spain places children by calendar year of birth, from January to December. Most of the UK and much of the United States cut the year at September instead. A child born between September and December, or in August, can land in a different year group than the one they are in now, and places are allocated per year group rather than per school.

What passport does the family hold?

It is the single answer that changes the most. An EU, EEA or Swiss passport means no visa at all — you register here instead, and you will never be issued a TIE. Everyone else applies before flying, and the route decides which documents you need and how they have to be legalised. If the family holds more than one, pick the strongest: one EU passport in the household is usually enough to change the answer.

Why this changes your school date

Buying takes months longer than renting and it delays the padron, the municipal register of who lives at an address. Your family address goes on the school application and proximity to the school is the second highest scoring criterion after siblings, so an address you cannot yet prove costs you points on every application. Renting first is usually what protects the school year.
