Valencia has a strong public healthcare system, and the SIP card is the practical gateway for families who are entitled to it. In the first months, many expats still keep private insurance so they can get faster appointments and easier English-language access while the rest of the move settles.

How the SIP system works

The Conselleria de Sanitat says the SIP is the administrative register that collects identification, location, assigned health resources, and the right to healthcare benefits for residents of the Comunitat Valenciana or displaced people accessing the public system. In other words, it is the system that lets the region know who you are and where you should be seen.

The official health page also says the SIP card is the document that accredits you as a user of the public health system, in the Comunitat Valenciana and across Spain. It can be physical or virtual through the GVA+Salut app, which is useful once family life gets busy.

What public healthcare gives you

Once your right is recognized, the public system gives you primary care, referrals, hospital care, and pediatric care through your assigned health centre. The portal lets you look up and manage your centre assignments, which is especially useful when you move to a new neighbourhood and need to know where to go first.

This is one reason the padrón matters so much. If you are moving with children, the practical sequence is usually address first, padrón next, then healthcare registration and the rest of the family admin. The system is designed around that order.

Why private cover still matters

Many families keep private cover during the first months because it shortens wait times and usually makes the first appointments simpler. That does not replace the public system. It just gives you a bridge while the move settles and while you learn how to use the public one properly.

If your visa requires private insurance, treat that as a separate compliance question and keep the policy active until your situation changes. Once you are settled, many families keep both public and private access because the combination works well in practice.

Children and pediatric care

Families with young children should pay attention to the assigned centre and the local pediatric workflow. The SIP portal and patient tools help you check your assigned resources, and that is useful before school starts or before the first winter illnesses arrive.

The public system is not only for emergencies. For everyday family life, the ability to access a regular doctor and pediatric pathway is one of the biggest quality-of-life wins after the move.
