How Much Money to Move to Valencia: Family Budget and Upfront Savings

The money question for Valencia is mostly a housing question and a school question. If you rent at the current city average and choose an international school, the upfront cash you need is very different from a family using public school and a central apartment.

Housing sets the floor

Idealista reported an average rent of 16.4 euros per square metre in Valencia in April 2026. That means a 90 square metre family flat works out to about 1,476 euros a month at the city average, before you add utilities or any move-in costs. That is the number to anchor the rest of the budget to, not a guess from an old article.

The legal rent deposit for a home lease in Spain is one month of rent under the LAU framework, so the basic move-in cash for that 90 square metre example is already two months of rent before the first school fee or furniture purchase. That alone makes it clear why families should budget with a buffer, not with hope.

School is the biggest swing factor

The school fee pages are what move a budget from manageable to stretched. British School of Valencia publishes monthly fees from 715 euros in early years to 957 euros in sixth form, plus an admission fee of 3,250 euros. Caxton College publishes monthly fees from 687 euros to 998 euros, with a 900 euro enrolment fee and a 464 euro annual resources fee. Cambridge House and Shackleton publish annual fee structures that also bring the first-year total up quickly.

So the right question is not simply “how much does Valencia cost?” It is “how much cash do I need before my family is living normally?” That answer depends on whether your children are in public school, concertado, or one of the international schools.

What a realistic move-in reserve looks like

• Housing deposit and first month: about two months of rent for your chosen flat.
• International school start-up: one-time enrolment or registration fees plus the first tuition cycle.
• Utilities, set-up purchases, and the first round of household admin.
• A reserve for the gap between arrival and the first stable month of normal life.

For a family that is keeping the move lean, the right answer is usually to hold several thousand euros in reserve, even before you think about school. For a family starting one or two international-school places, the reserve needs to be materially larger because the first month is not just rent, it is rent plus admissions and recurring tuition.

How the school examples change the math

British School of Valencia adds a 3,250 euro first-time admission fee, 445 euro annual renewal, 242 euro per term in materials, and 210 euro a month for lunch in the younger years. Caxton includes lunch in tuition but still adds enrolment and resources fees. Cambridge House publishes 2026-27 tuition from 7,700 to 9,950 euros a year, with a 380 euro registration fee and a 380 euro re-enrolment fee. Shackleton publishes 2025-26 tuition from 8,290 to 9,990 euros a year, plus a 1,015 euro registration fee and a 165 euro reservation fee.

That is why many families say the school choice is the budget choice. They are right. The school is not just where the children go. It is one of the biggest cash decisions in the move.

We would use the city rent average, add the legal deposit, add the one-time school fees for the exact school shortlist, and then keep extra cash in reserve for the weeks when nothing feels settled yet.
